Densen has a long history of designing DACs, since their team, has been involved in projects for several other companies. Now, comes the first full size Densen DAC under Densen's own name, the DenDAC 50. DenDAC 50 is a rare breed, the company says. Typically, if not always, a DAC in these days is designed with a digital volume control. However, this inevitably will lead to reduced resolution on low listening levels. DenDAC 50 uses instead an analogue, Class A, preamp stage, very similar to the preamp stage found in the Densen reference preamp B-275. The analogue stages are based on Densen's famed 6 watt class A amplifier stage, with no negative feedback (neither global or local), which here is obvious used in a version with less than 6 watts output. It contains a relay driven attenuator, which is controlled by a microprocessor, and offer a resolution of 200 steps.
In the digital domain, Densen offers some rather unusual features. The DenDAC 50 has an internal port, that will allow to mount a small PCB with a digital input, in case there is, in the future, some digital input standard which is currently not present on the DenDAC 50. This will also allow the implementation the forthcoming Densen WiFi board. Another option could be a Bluetooth receiver board, but Densen does not have that in the pipeline at the moment. Besides that, the DenDAC 50 contains a USB input, 2 coax inputs and 2 Toslink inputs. The DAC circuit is a new 24 bit design which is mounted under a shield, to avoid digital interference on the analogue stages.
DenDAC50 has a carefully designed layout in the digital domain, using a 4 layer PCB for additional optimization of the signal path, ground planes and shielding of the signals. DenDAC 50 also contains 3 analogue preamp inputs. This allows analogue sources as Tuners, TVs, tape decks etc to be connected to the DenDAC 50. The tape output can also be used as line output to a headphone amp if so desired. The DenDAC 50 also has 2 headphone outputs. A classic jack and a mini-jack output, allows for all users of headphones to use the DenDAC 50 directly. There is a fixed output, intended for preamps, and a variable output allowing for connection to power amps. The variable output is using the analogue preamp with the microprocessor controlled attenuator.
As usual for a Densen product, the power supply is carefully optimized. DenDAC50 contains 2 custom made toroidal transformers and 50.000uF of storage capacity. Further, nothing less than 18 individual regulators feed the circuits, and allow each of them to perform at its full potential, without interference. The DenDAC50 uses the best components throughout the design, such as custom made capacitors, Vishay metal film resistors and gold plated RCA connectors directly placed to the printed circuit board.
