Burson unveiled details about the Play amp, a design capable to drive all types of headphones and an easy one to use, if you like to try some op-amp rolling. The new device features an ESS Sabre-based top class DAC with 32bit/384kHz, DXD and DSD256 playback capacity, paired with an XMOS USB receiver and pure Class A circuitry.
With a 70W power supply and a power stage yielding up to 2W per channel, the Play is one of the most powerful headphone amplifiers in the world. Regardless of the headphone type, the user can feel the power and accuracy at any volume level, the company states. Additionally with pure class A circuitry and with no ICs on the signal path, the Play is a remote controlled preamp that teams perfectly with any power amp or active speakers.
One of the interesting sides the Play has, is the possibility for op-amp rolling it offers. By changing op-amps (operational amplifiers, the basic blocks of its circuitry), the user can experiment and even tailor its sound to suit his preference. Op-amp rolling is a major part of the audiophile hobby and there are countless online discussions dedicated to it, Burson says. It offers the opportunity to compare and appreciate different sonic performance and it is a valuable opportunity to develop listening preference and taste and the Play is the ultimate op-amp rolling platform.
The Burson Play features the SABRE32/ESS9018 DAC chip and an XMOS USB receiver chip, and as its class A power stage outputs up to 2000mW per channel, it is over 20 times more powerful than the next best sound-card. This fact, along with a high-performance mic input and a chassis that fits into any PC case elegantly, make the Play a perfect audio subsystem for a high performance desktop audio/multimedia or for a Game-optimized computer.
Burson offers five different versions of the Play, the Basic with NE5532/NE5543 op-amps, the V5i version (with dual and single V5i modules), the V5 (with dual and single V5 modules), the V6 Vivid version (with dual and single V6-vivid modules) and the V6 Classic version (with dual and single V6-Classic modules).
Price range is from $300 for the Basic version (without remote) up to $550 for the top V6 Vivid and V6 Classic versions.
