Ortofon’s new Test Record contains special test signals developed for analyzing cartridge performance as well as its interaction with the tonearm and turntable. Those who remember or own the original “Test Record”, have every reason to rejoice, because Ortofon seems to offer some improvements and additions in this new version.
The Test Record is designed to be played through any system with a built-in RIAA equalization and consists of 15 tracks in total, with both sides containing the same tracks (a common practice to most professional vinyl test records). The new LP does not contain any music material.
The first four tracks are linear cut, logarithmic frequency sweeps for the left and the right channels, starting at 800Hz and stopping at 50kHz with a ±1.5dB accuracy, for frequency response evaluation. These are followed by four reference tracks with 1kHz tone. With this standard reference signal is it possible to check the correctness of the connections of the left and right channels, channel balance and speed of the turntable. The record, also, includes six 315Hz, lateral tracking ability test tracks in various recording peaks to test both for tracking ability and correct anti-skating force adjustment. The final track is a 2.7mS squarewave with a 3:7 duty cycle, for use with an oscilloscope, to check for correct cartridge connection.
