Inspired by natural shapes, Deeptimes's Ionic Sound System is designed by Ondrej Chotovinsky and Martin Hreben to be both a superb sounding audio solution and a sculptural object. The first audio system that is 3D printed from sand, is now available in a limited edition of 1618 sets.
The textured sand gives the enclosures a very distinct look and feel, the company says, and, additionally, the weight and density of the material, reinforced by custom-made hardener, prevents unwanted resonance behaviour. Every loudspeaker is made from a single piece with no visible split lines or bolts holding the enclosures together. This is achieved through additive manufacturing techniques. The Ionic consists of a pair of passive satellites, the Spirula and an active sub, the Thunderstone.
The Spirula are optimized for high efficiency and, when placed on a table, radiate sound directly to a seated listener’s ears. The enclosure is made of silica sand and aluminum and the tapered interior surface is entirely rounded with no flat areas, ensuring that any vibration produced by the driver does not get reflected toward the listener, guaranteeing audio clarity. Spirula is a sealed design, featuring a three-inch full range driver with bamboo fiber cone and cone surround made of santoprene, an extremely light, flexible and extraordinarily durable type of polymer. Frequency response is 75Hz-20kHz.
Thunderstone's shape is inspired by the fossils of black sea urchins, with the height and diameter in the golden ratio. The trilateral symmetry is a crucial part of the design, as the shape allows for three bass ports. The advantage of multiple ports lies partly on the reduced size of the individual ports, each 1.618 inches in diameter, the company says. More importantly, the form can contain much longer resonant tubes than a single port or a rectangular enclosure can.
The sub features a 5.75-inch driver supported by a class-D amplifier. A triplet of round tipped spikes carries the weight of Thunderstone, minimizing the area the sub touches. Each port also contains an LED light source. A subtle amber light indicates when the subwoofer is plugged in and gently brightens as the volume increases. The two volume control rings on top of the Thunderstone are magnetic Hall Effect sensors which are almost indestructible and will perform flawlessly for decades. Made out of anodized aluminum, they serve as an additional passive cooler for the built-in D-class amplifier, which makes them slightly warm and a pleasure to the touch. The external ring adjusts the bass, the internal ring controls the volume of the entire Ionic Sound System.
The Ionic includes a 3.5mm TRS jack to connect analog sources and an optical input for digital sources (the included DAC goes up to 24/96). It is also capable to stream wirelessly via a Bluetooth aptX/AAC connection.
The system is already available with a price tag of €3,142,- (including VAT).
