SPL's Phonitor was a success story; designed and developed for the sound engineer to be able to mix on headphones, it soon found a fan base among Hi-Fi aficionados around the world as they realized that they can enjoy 'their' music on headphones the way it was intended. Now, the xe version is the ultimate standalone device for headphone enthusiasts who want the perfect solution without any compromises. In contrast to the Phonitor x, the Phonitor xe renounces the preamplifier function and unlike the Phonitor e, it features the nice VU meters and the fully featured Phonitor Matrix.
In this case the Phonitor Matrix is identical to that used in the Phonitor x, but purely designed for audio playback, therefore, unlike the professional version, features like Center Level, Solo and Polarity are not offered, as they are only of use in music production. The 6-step Crossfeed switch allows the user to adjust the frequency-dependent crossfeed simulation of both channels by adjustments of interaural level difference. Crossfeed interacts with the Angle value to simulate the width of a stereo image. The Angle switch provides for frequency-dependent simulation of the stereo image width by adjustments of interaural time difference within a range of 90 to 635ms.
The device features both single ended (RCA) and balanced (XLR) analog inputs and balanced (4-pin XLR) and standard (1/4-inch TRS) headphone output sockets, both on the front and on the back. A switch on the front allows to toggle between the two groups, allowing to compare headphones without plugging and unplugging. Balanced headphones can be connected to the 4-pin XLR socket and the amplifier has a built-in advanced dual power amp that drives balanced headphones with twice the power of the standard 1/4-inch jack. This tightens the bass response and makes the overall playback even more relaxed and transparent, the company says. The power amp yields up to 2x1W at 600 Ohm up to 2x2.7W at 32 Ohm loads, with an output impedance of 0.36 Ohm.
The Phonitor xe is the first Phonitor headphone amplifier which can be equipped with SPL's brand-new DAC768. This optional internal converter feature S/PDIF (coaxial and Toslink), AES/EBU (XLR) and USB (B-type) inputs and supports audio resolution of 32 bits and PCM sample rates up to 768kHz as well as DSD – up to DSD256. The analog side of the converter features an active low pass filter built with 120V-Voltair technology.
