Starting with the acquisition of the Thorens brand by Gunter Kurten and the resettlement to Germany in 2018, a revival process of the company began. The first result of this appears to be the introduction of TD 1600 and TD 1601, two turntables which can be considered as modern incarnation of TD 160.
Both models use suspension and damping featuring conical springs for effective decoupling, but also both are totally redesigned, filling the gap between tradition that made the old turntables famous and the 21st century technology.
The connoisseur immediately recognizes some of the TD 160 series details, including the wooden plinth, the platter/sub-platter architecture with the belt running under the main platter, the thick rubber mat and the acrylic dust cover. Nevertheless, according to the press release, there are a lot of innovations under the hood: the conical springs are are not mounted on the top board any longer but on the botton, so the sub-chassis does not hang, but floats on these springs. Additionally, a small but strong tightened thread made of steel connects the sub-chassis with a steel pin on the bottom and so prevents it from staggering allowing movement along the vertical axis only.
Both models share the same plinth and mechanical parts and the same height adjustable TP 92 tonearm, but TD 1601 adds some comfort features. While TD 1600 is a totally manual turntable, the TD 1601 comes with an electric lift, auto shut off at the end of the record with lifting the arm and a real balanced output (with XLR plugs). The motor, the control unit and the power supply are identical in both models.
The TD1600 and TD1601 will be available from August, in high gloss walnut and piano black finishes.
