Moonriver Audio from Sweden, recently announced a new model, the 404 Reference integrated amplifier, which is the improved version of their standard 404 model.
According to the press release, the Reference version follows the runaway success of the standard Moonriver Model 404, but moves further, by improving on the already excellent design platform of the Standard 404 model. The form, controls, ergonomics and design are similar, but the major difference is found at the heart of the amplifier: the power supplies. The power supplies for both preamp and power amp have double the capacitance, which gives a big advantage in how the Reference handles the incoming signal. The dynamic character of the amplifier digs out more detail, and low level information; the sound stage is much deeper and articulate; the space between instruments is vast, while the bass has greater authority and is more confident than ever before. The texture of each individual instrument is exposed exponentially in comparison with the Standard version, the company says.
The Moonriver 404 Reference can drive most speakers in the market to significant levels. WBT nextgen speaker terminals ensure the massive flow of current from the amplifier’s output stage to the speakers. The 404 Reference chassis reduces unwanted resonant vibrations even further with absorbent materials, and better integral mechanical support.
The 404 integrated amplifier platform yields 2x50W per channel in 8 Ohm loads and features 5 inputs and the option to add a phono preamplifier and a USB DAC module. Moonriver states that both the 404 and the 404 Reference will continue to enjoy new optional modules in the years to come.
The 404 Reference will start shipping in December 2020 with $4,995.- retail price in the U.S. and €4,490.- in Europe and Asia
