Pro-Ject Audio Systems recently announced the Phono Box RS2, their most sophisticated phono preamp to date, a device which offers features and performance only found in the most expensive gear – but at a fraction of the cost.
According to the press release, since Pro-Ject created the Box-Design series of Hi-Fi components nearly twenty years ago, the phono preamp has naturally played a special role in their range of products, due to the company's roots in turntable manufacturing. Many Box-Design models and ranges later, the company feels able to unveil the pinnacle of their experience and know-how, the flagship of 17 model line-up of phono stages: the Phono Box RS2.
Handmade in the EU, the Phono Box RS2 is designed to be integrated into any hi-end gear setup regardless of price. True to the Pro-Ject spirit, the new phono preamp offers features and performance only found in the most expensive gear. The Phono Box RS2 is available for MSRP €1499,- (incl. VAT) at Pro-Ject dealers.
The new device offers extra-wide gain gamut to allow for the use of MM and MC cartridges (the user can select between 8 different values, from 40 to 70dB), selectable de-emphasis curve to match both international recording standards, from RIAA and Decca, through fully passive equalization networks and features a balance control, with a range of 4dB in total, which is rather unusual, but quite useful, given that channel balance is quite often poor in phono cartridges.
Phono Box RS2 is based on a true dual-mono architecture and uses discrete components for the whole circuit, avoiding operational amplifiers in the form of integrated circuits, in a full balanced design.
Connectivity includes single ended and balanced inputs and outputs. Interfacing with the phono cartridge includes a 6-position load selector for moving coils, from 10 Ohm to 1000 Ohm, and an 8-position capacitance selector for moving magnets, from 50 to 400pF.
