Twenty years have passed since SR-Ω (Omega) was released, and Stax evolved their iconic metal-mesh electrode from the MLER-2 to the MLER-3 version. This new version is followed by a new flagship model, the SR-X9000 and the company is open for pre-orders.
A fixed electrode which reduces air resistance and the effect of reflection, offering high sound transparency is the core of any top-quality electrostatic headphone system. This was already found in the metal-mesh electrode of SR-X, which was released from Stax in 1970. After that, the company was challenged to realize metal-mesh electrodes for SR-Ω in 90’s again. However, the big metal-mesh electrode was difficult to manufacture. So, the mass production was extremely difficult. This is why SR-Ω was produced in small quantities even though this product has high quality sound. Twenty years have passed since SR-Ω was released and in the meantime, the manufacturing technology of metal-mesh was improved, while -through the development of SR-009- the know-how of manufacturing multi-layer fixed electrodes evolved and MLER-2, which was installed in SR-009S, evolved into the four-layer MLER-3. The new diaphragm increased 20% in size compared with the previous flagship model and is made of ultra-thin plastic film offering great transient characteristic and the widest sound field ever, the company says.
The enclosure which is made of tough machined aluminum eliminates unnecessary vibrations and the guard mesh has pillars of different heights in front and back offering a completely controlled reflection angle.
The arc assembly is more tolerant to torsion and the earspeakers more stably fit the listener's ears. The material of the head pad which directly contacts to the skin is genuine leather. The position can be adjusted by a slider with 9 steps click system. The material of the ear pads is, also, genuine leather (sheep skin) which has excellent breathability and softness.
The new model features the original Stax low-capacity, wide, hybrid cable made of 6NCu ultra-pure annealed copper and silver-plated annealed copper wires. The cable can be upgraded to a higher-class part in the future and offers easily maintenance if the it is broken.
The SR-X9000 is available for pre-orders at $6,200,-
