Pro-Ject introduced the original Pre Box Digital S2 in the spring of 2017. A John Westlake design, it combined a DAC, a headphone amp, and a pre-amp with three digital inputs into their S2 chassis, only slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes. For 2023 the company decided to upgrade the power supply design, the master clock, and the analog output stage. All the upgrades were made also from John Westlake.
The Pre Box S2 Digital's features a clever combination of a custom and proprietary clock design, PCB layout featuring separate power supplies, dual differential ESS DACs, and an exclusive proprietary digital filter designed to deliver pristine and transparent transient response, the company says.
According to the press release, the redesigned and improved master clocks lower the phase noise and further enhance the already extremely low jitter, while the power supply units (PSUs) of the clock, DACs, and analog output stages have undergone enhancements to offer increased isolation from PC USB noise and achieve a broader/flatter output impedance across the entire audio bandwidth.
The new analog output stage, based around the 9603Q d/a chips, has a higher Class A operating current for improved performance with low-impedance headphones and long cable runs. The entire design offers lower distortion when used with low-impedance headphones.
Ideal partners for the Pre Box S2 Digital are the Stream Box S2 Ultra, for seamless streaming, and the Accu Box S2 to supply clean power for the Pre Box S2 Digital and the Stream Box S2 from batteries.
