The A1s is a bigger, heavier automatic turntable, a design taken to the next level, featuring a tonearm with new bearing and arm-tube and a new, heavier, plinth. The A2 features an 8.3-inch ultra-light-mass aluminum tone-arm with a bigger diameter tonearm tube – a perfect match for the slightly heavier Ortofon 2M Red.
The tonearm bearing has received a major upgrade, is now made out of aluminum and features a 4-pin-point gimbal construction with steel-tip ball bearings.
The tonearm is a dynamically balanced design. Damping the counterweight makes the tonearm as a whole more robust and decouples the counterweight from the tonearm reducing resonant frequencies, the company says. Tracking force is set by adjusting a precision spring from the watch industry directly on the tone-arm bearing. This keeps the center of gravity directly on top of the bearing center.
The heavy MDF main plinth is carefully hand-painted in a luxurious 8-layer matte black finish and avoids hollow spaces wherever possible. Its mass greatly reduces unwanted resonances and decouples the A2 from outside influences. In addition, the A2 employs a sub-chassis construction. The tone-arm, platter bearing and motor are mounted onto a separate floating sub-chassis.
The A2 continues the success of our fully mechanical automatic turntables. With the A2, you can now select the drop off point for 7-inch (singles) or 12-inch (LPs) for 45 RPM records. Pro-Ject have also added 78rpm, allowing you to dig back into old shellac collections. The company says that because the automatics are working entirely mechanically – no additional electronics needed – they truly do not influence or degrade sound quality during playback.
The motor is electronically controlled for accurate and stable playback speeds. There is a new aluminum die cast top for the whole sub-chassis and automatic mechanism, therefore the whole sub-chassis construction is more effective and isolates unwanted resonance much better.
The Automat A2 is available for MSRP €1.199 (incl. VAT).
