Assos Woodworking Model 1

It is quite likely that you are already familiar with Assos Woodworking, founded by Aristidis Chatzigiannis. It is a relatively new company in the field, which in recent years has made a notable presence at exhibitions (both domestic and international) and in-store demonstration studios. Their shelves have supported quite a few large (and well-known) pieces of high-performance contemporary audio equipment. The company’s team, based in Larissa, Thessalia, in Greece, has undertaken a rather aggressive strategy aimed at penetrating the (not particularly easy) market of audio support systems.
Assos, of course, did not appear out of nowhere. It is a manufacturer of wooden products with a 40-year history in the processing of this material, with significant, by all appearances, experience and equipment. This is a key prerequisite and, when combined with a passion for high-quality sound, the “accident” is bound to happen sooner or later — one finds oneself faced with the challenge of applying their expertise to the field of high fidelity.
The company’s philosophy is clear, as are the lines of most of its products. In a market where exotic materials, extreme solutions, and hard metals tend to dominate, the company’s love for wood (and their comparative advantage in woodworking and construction, of course) is evident. Their designs are therefore based on wood for most structural parts and include metal components only where necessary.
According to the company, this strategic choice is based on wood’s ability — under certain conditions — to absorb vibrations without resonating itself, which for Assos is a fundamental feature for a high-performance support system.
That said, the company is characterized by two additional noteworthy traits. The first is its, bordering on obsessive, attention to build quality and finishing of the products; the second is the possibility of custom manufacturing, both in terms of the number and arrangement of shelves, as well as in their dimensions. The company’s product catalog includes several rack models and speaker stands, but in practice, the buyer can simply describe their needs and receive exactly what they want.
The Model 1, which we review in the following pages, is the company's basic model, yet it encompasses everything Assos Woodworking stands for.
Let us see what they have done.
